BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WIAT) — As of Tuesday night, all plans to win a Republican majority are on hold until the US House of Representatives agrees on a new House Speaker.
CBS 42 political analyst Steve Flowers says two Alabama representatives are likely to back Kevin McCarthy for California. He said representatives were lined up for positions on the committee.
“This is how speakers are selected,” Flowers said. “If you make me chairman of the military committee or vice chairman of the budget, people will commit to the speaker.”
With Republicans holding a majority in the House, Flowers said it would take unanimity to get 218 votes for one candidate.
“There are 19 or 20 bombers, right-wing people who really don’t want to be on the committee, they don’t care, they just want to be bombers,” Flowers said. . “This needs to be resolved, and it needs to be resolved very quickly, because Congress cannot function without it.”
Flowers said Rogers would be chairman of the Armed Services Committee and that Congressman Robert Aderholt would be chairman of the Appropriations Committee. The House of Representatives will reconvene at noon (EST) on Wednesday.
