Editor’s note: Reader reactions below are in response to the New Mexico Attorney General’s effort to void the anti-abortion ordinance recently passed by Clovis and Roosevelt counties.
City Council is not representative
We all knew this was coming.
When a conference was held to discuss this, one side of the issue brought up facts and warnings of swift and inevitable legal action, while the other quoted a passage of Scripture to throw insults.
The Clovis City Council claims that it listened to both sides and still chose to irresponsibly endanger the city of Clovis. It was he who decided the fate of our city. And while active efforts are being made to overturn this locally throughout the electoral process, all of this could have been avoided if voted down, or better yet, not introduced at all. I can’t help but think of a way.
The ordinance’s out-of-state authors claimed to represent our city for free. Let’s hope he’s a man who keeps his promises. In any event, any judgment against the city will be our responsibility.
All of this is for short-sighted, symbolic “victory,” and as I’ve come to know, it doesn’t represent what the majority of Clovis want or believe.
Just because your beliefs are aligned with an uncomfortably loud minority doesn’t mean you’re violating the individual liberties of rural communities.
Especially not in the sense that hardworking taxpayers’ money can be used to wage war.
The citizens of Clovis deserve to be heard on this topic, but it is becoming increasingly clear that the city’s commissions are not listening. We applaud AG for taking swift action against this constitutional violation.
As for the Commissioner, you reap what you sow.

all rights must be protected
I am a resident of Portales and Roosevelt counties. I am a mother of a daughter and four granddaughters. I am also retired from the Air Force, he has been on active duty for 9 years and in the reserve for 16 years.
I have served my country to defend the rights of all citizens, all races, all religions and even non-religious people of all genders and orientations.
I did not serve my country to have my daughters and granddaughters have less rights than I do.
