Convention chair says he was threatened
Saginaw County, Michigan (WJRT) – Police were called as a result of the controversial Saginaw County Republican convention, with the convention chair claiming he was threatened.
Infighting began among Republicans in Saginaw County last November. After Thursday night’s events, things aren’t looking much better.
This happens when certain factions of the party are competing for control.
At least six police officers were called to the convention in Thomas Township. Things eventually settled down, but the struggle for the soul of the Saginaw County Republican Party seems to continue.
“Video footage shows the minutes are not accurate,” Josiah Juster can be heard saying at the convention Thursday night.
He was voted as president of the Saginaw County Republican convention held to select district delegates for next month’s state convention.
Kurt Tucker, executive committee member Debra Elle, stood next to Juster as he verbally argued with the then-conference chairman about the rules.
“I have asked the representative not to stand next to me while I speak. The representative is out of order,” Juster said.
“Sit down,” someone shouted.
“The delegate is out of order,” Juster repeated.
“No, you are out of order,” another shouted.
Elle, a member of the party’s America First faction, eventually walks away after asking Juster if he intends to take over this convention.
“I have no doubt that she was trying to intimidate me,” Juster said.
After some time, the police and other departments of Thomas Township were called to a convention to keep the peace.
“It was kind of embarrassing,” said Tom Roy.
Once the district delegate ballots were finished, more moderate Republicans like Roy won the delegate slots. He resigned as vice chairman last month after he and others felt the America First had taken over the party.
“People have some common sense, some sanity, and they understand that they have to work together to bring everyone together,” Roy said of the majority of people elected to represent their constituencies.
Juster said the people who voted for delegates to the state convention were diverse.
“It’s a mix of people, some moderates in the ruling class, some conservatives, a lot of America First,” said Juster, who identifies with America First. rice field.
Still, he believes he was threatened before and during the tournament.
“People approached me trying to attack me and made physical contact when they tried to do so. I was not injured,” Juster said.
Elle was not available for comment on Friday. Saginaw County Republican Party Chairman Kurt Tucker admitted there had been a personality clash but wants to end the infighting.
Thirty-seven delegates from Saginaw County were selected to attend the state Republican convention.
