Senator Joe Manchin (DW.Va) made no promises on Sunday about whether to seek re-election to the Senate in 2024.
Important reasons: Republicans are already eyeing West Virginia as the frontrunner to regain control of the House.
- One Republican, West Virginia Rep. Alex Mooney, has already announced that he will run for Manchin’s seat in 2024.
What he says: “I haven’t decided what I’m going to do in 2024 yet,” Manchin was asked on Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press if he would run as a Democrat.
- “It will take another two years to do what is best for the state and the country,” he said.
- “Everything is on the table,” added Manchin, who did not rule out running for president in 2024. He did rule out running for governor of West Virginia in 2024.
- “I will do everything I can to make decisions based on what I think I can do to best serve my country and state,” he said.
Zoom out: Democrats face a map for the 2024 Senate that is hugely favorable to Republicans, seeking to maintain control of many seats, including some of the states that former President Trump won in 2020.
