Attorney General Ton Appoints Irene Meskill as Deputy Attorney General
(Hartford, Conn.) – Attorney General William Tong today announced the appointment of Eileen Meskill as Deputy Attorney General to succeed Margaret Q. Chapple. Four Deputy Attorney Generals.
A test and experienced litigator and leader in the Office of the Attorney General, Irene is the most well-prepared attorney to take on the role. As one of the , we are committed to these responsibilities: ensuring access to quality health care for all, protecting personal privacy and data, keeping children safe online, and combating the dangerous effects of social media. I know Eileen is the right person to lead us in these important endeavors.” Attorney General Ton said.
“I am extremely honored and grateful that the Attorney General has been entrusted with this important role. I am delighted to be able to take the leadership of the team and if he were here today he would be very proud.” Eileen Meskill said.
She is the daughter of Governor Thomas J. Meskill, who also served as a judge on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
Eileen Meskill will be sworn in by Connecticut Supreme Court Justice Gregory T. D’Auria in the Attorney General’s Office at 3:00 pm on January 4.
Eileen Meskill currently serves as Attorney General and Head of the Department of Government Administration, overseeing the functioning of the Department’s Child Support and Collections, Infrastructure and Economic Development, and Special Litigation Sections.
She joined the firm in 1997 after working as an associate in the firm of Gaffney Kane, Reynolds & Sullivan. Irene has deep experience in various sections of the office including health and education, consumer protection, infrastructure and economic development. She has represented multiple state agencies in complex and high-impact cases, and has heard and argued cases before the Connecticut Superior Court, the Connecticut Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court, the United States District Court, and the Second Circuit.
Prior to his appointment as Attorney General, he served as Chief of the Infrastructure and Economic Development Section, Ministry of Transportation, Administrative Services, Housing, and Automobile Division. In this role, in addition to overseeing the Section, negotiate and mediate large-scale construction claims, review, advise, and approve agency contracts, and supervise the Attorney General on transportation-specific matters such as denunciations, construction, and contracts. I consulted with the office leader and advised. , Procurement Law and Administrative Appeals.
Eileen holds a degree in economics from Fairfield College and is a graduate of the University of Connecticut Law School. She is married to her husband Drew Garoop and has two stepchildren. They live together in New Britain.
Attorney General Tong thanked Deputy Attorney General Chapple for her extraordinary service to the state and congratulated her on her honorable retirement. She temporarily retired in 2015 and agreed to return to the Office of the Attorney General to serve as her deputy.
