Rapid City, South Dakota (KOTA) – At the end of 2022, the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office will release the South Dakota Crime 2021 Report.
According to a release from the AG office, the 2021 report shows the work of law enforcement agencies across the state to help determine personnel allocations and information and technical resources.
“Crime statistics are an essential asset that help us identify trends in criminal activity,” said Chad Mosteller, interim director of the Criminal Investigation Service. “And it helps law enforcement officers and agencies in their efforts to keep South Dakota communities safe.”
South Dakota law enforcement has reported 38,160 arrests in 2021, including 69,277 offences.

- Assault – 5,070
- Theft/Theft – 908
- Fraud – 574
- Drugs/Drugs – 6,928
- Prostitution – 7
- kidnapping – 64
- Robbery – 52
- Arson – 17
- Robbery – 204
- Auto Theft – 270
- Counterfeit – 152
- embezzlement – 12
- Swag – 167
- Destruction of property – 386
- Pornography / Obscenities – 26
- Weapons Law Violation – 274
Less serious crimes include:
- DUI-5,654
- Violations of the Liquor Law – 1,526 cases
- Disruptive behavior – 2,615
In November 2022, the Office of the Attorney General will hire a full-time Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Coordinator, and going forward, the Office will collect cases investigated in Indian Country and report them in this publication. That information was not previously included in state totals, nor is it included in the 2021 report.
