Samadjadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday announced the party’s 63-member national cadre, including former estranged uncle Shivpal Yadav, controversial leader Swami Prasad Maurya and veteran Azam Khan. was appointed as general secretary.
Maurya’s elevation in the SP sparked backlash from the BJP and parliament, with both parties condemning the appointment following Maurya’s offensive references to “Ramcharitamanas.”
The BJP said the SP’s anti-Hindu and despicable looks had surfaced, but parliament said it “now knows on whose orders Maurya said what he said”. .
Shivpal Yadav, who was kicked out of the UP cabinet in 2016 after falling out with Akilesh and left to form his own organization, was finally rehabilitated within the party today.
Shivpal and Akilesh united for the by-election of Mainpuri Lok Sabha after the death of SP patron Murayam Singh Yadav.
As a candidate for SP the unity paid off and Akhilesh’s wife Dimple Yadav won the Mainpuri LS Bipole by more than 28,000 votes.
In all, Akilesh announced 14 general secretaries. Other state secretaries-general include Ravi Prakash Verma, Balam Yadav, Vishwamba Prasad Nishad and Awadesh Prasad.
