The small-cap index barely matched the 2022 large-cap barometer, the Nifty50. But 2023 could be different. Valuations on the small-cap index still look a little high compared to historical valuations, but analysts expect him to rebound in 2023. It is based on historical return trends.
Since 2005, the Nifty Smallcap100 has had only five negative returns. Swastika Invest Mart’s managing director Sunil Nyati said he had a return of more than 20% the following year, except for his one deal in 2019.
In 2022, the Nifty Smallcap 100 Index is down 13% while the Nifty50 is up 4%.
Mr Nyati said easing inflation and interest rates will push down raw material costs and interest rates, so margins for small-cap companies will increase. He said the worst was over when it came to inflation and the outlook for the Indian economy was promising.
“We expect small caps to rebound in 2023,” analysts said.
Vinod Nair of Geojit Financial Services noted that the Nifty Smallcap100 1-year futures P/E is trading at 16.5x, well softened from its high of 24x, and looks attractive.
“However, when peer analysis is compared to large-cap stocks, they are trading at an 11% discount compared to the Nifty50 index. Historically, peer-to-peer valuations have ranged from 15% at the highest to 35% at the lowest. The 10-year average is a minus 17% discount. This suggests that small caps are still trading slightly above their historical averages. It can be regarded as a suitable year for the
Vikram Kasat – Head Advisory Prabhudas Lilladher says small caps will do well going forward. Investors should be familiar with management teams and growth visions, especially for small caps.
Marc Depalieres. Meanwhile, Vantage’s chief strategy and trading officer noted that small-cap stocks carry more risk and yield higher returns than mid- or large-cap stocks.
“In 2022, the Nifty Smallcap 100 has lost about one-sixth of its value. We may see a mean-reversion year when the small-cap index begins to rise again. It can be a high-risk approach for companies,” he said.
