PEORIA (25 News Now) – Local Republican leaders have decided who will replace outgoing state Senator Jason Barrickman next week.
Barrickman chose to resign after winning re-election in the new 53rd District. Incumbent state congressman Tom Bennett takes his place, receiving 87% of the vote. Regular town councilor Stan Noll won the remaining votes.
Candidates were interviewed Saturday morning at a meeting of 13 county chiefs held at Elks Lodge in Pontiac. The Republican Speakers making the nominations are Chuck Weaver of Peoria County, Dennis Grandler of McLean County, Jim Rule of Taswell County, Tim Roostman of Woodford County, Dave Rice of Livingston County, and Dave Rice of Marshall County. Luders, Jacob Hrund of Putnam County, Barry. Welbers of Bureau County, Larry Smith of LaSalle County, Jeff Orr of Ford County, Eric Warden of Grundy County, Tim Ozinga of Will County and Lyle Berens of Iroquois County.
Bennett will be sworn in on Wednesday. The appointment creates a new vacancy in the state House of Representatives. The district’s Republican leader will also be able to nominate his replacement within 30 days of his resignation.
